Tips for Young Canadians

Try Sports to Get SummerActive

This summer, Canadian athletes will participate in the 2008 Olympic Games (August 8 - 24) and the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games (September 6 -17) in Beijing, China. These two prestigious and exciting international events will showcase world class athletes competing in many different sports. Let’s take advantage of this enthusiasm and energy to take up the sport challenge this summer!

You don’t have to be a world class athlete in order to enjoy and reap the many benefits of participating in sport. There’s a whole variety of summer sports you can enjoy, whether it’s done in a casual setting with family or friends, or in an organized league or club competition.

For example, you could try these  outdoor sports: cycling, skateboarding, water skiing, canoeing, soccer, baseball, and in-line skating.

You could also try indoor sports, such as swimming, martial arts, basketball, volleyball, racquetball and gymnastics to name a few.

You can learn more than just new athletic skills from playing sports. Sports give you a chance to make new friends, build your confidence, and learn new things about yourself.

Playing sports can be challenging, and it can help you learn the value of leadership, fair play, teamwork, commitment, goal-setting, and self-confidence.

Your school or community centre probably offers a variety of different sports programs that you could sign-up for.

If you don’t know of any organized sports activities, why not get some friends together and create your own team sporting event.

SummerActive is brought to you by the Government of Canada in collaboration with provincial and territorial governments.
