Manitoba

In motion is a provincial strategy to help all Manitobans make physical activity part of their daily lives for health and enjoyment.  Our vision is to make Manitobans healthier by increasing physical activity in the province by 10 percentage points by the year 2010.

Most of us already know the importance of active living.  Physical activity increases energy, reduces stress, strengthens the heart and lungs and helps us reach and maintain a healthy body weight.  The result is a better quality of life for people of all ages.

Yet less than half of all Manitobans get enough physical activity to gain those health benefits.

What’s needed is the motivation to get ourselves and each other in motion.  The provincial government has joined with community partners in physical activity, health, healthy living, recreation, sport and education to raise activity levels and reduced barriers to physical activity.

How much physical activity is enough?

Canada’s Physical Activity Guide says accumulate 30-60 minutes of moderate physical activity daily to stay healthy or improve health.  Add up your activities in periods of 10 minutes each.  Start slowly…and build up.

In motion has four key components:

  • building partnerships
  • increasing public awareness
  • developing strategies for target areas
  • measuring success.

In motion strategies focus on five specific groups

  • children
  • youth
  • adults
  • older adults
  • families

Settings will include:

  • communities
  • workplaces
  • schools

Support is available to help schools, workplaces and communities develop action plans to get in motion.  Currently there are 80 registered Communities in motion, over 30 registered Workplaces in motion  and over 460 Healthy Schools in motion.

Moving Around Manitoba
Moving Around Manitoba is an exciting initiative encouraging Manitobans to get “in motion” by increasing physical activity, making healthy eating choices, and supporting emotional well-being.  Collectively, thousands of Manitobans are making virtual trips around Manitoba as we track our physical activity on the Moving Around Manitoba website.  Let’s stay “in motion” this summer!

Do you know a Motivator in motion?

Motivators in motion are people in your community who believe in and promote the in motion message of regular physical activity for health and enjoyment.  Join hundreds of other Manitobans as we get ready to move around the province for good health. Individuals of all ages and fitness levels, families, groups and communities can participate. We'll track our progress and see how many times we can move around Manitoba in the months ahead!

Motivators in motion can be children, youth, adults, seniors, families or groups.  A motivator may be one person, a classroom, an entire school or another type of organization.

Motivators in motion will be:

  • featured on the in motion website and in other publications
  • invited to in motion events as participants
  • recognized with in motion gift items
